Listening to Music While Writing
Lately, I’ve been enjoying instrumental jazz or piano music. I find it light and relaxing, without distracting lyrics. It helps me focus on my writing. But as I approach day three of NaNoWriMo at a deficit, yes I am still playing catch up from all that I cut out yesterday. I got to thinking maybe I needed something a little bit more than Jazz or Piano to make me want to write.
It’s interesting how certain songs can fit perfectly with the scene I’m watching on TV.
So you probably know that my current work is about a young woman who finds out that her husband cheated on her, at the same time things are kind of falling apart at work, and so she slinks back home to mom to lick her wounds and while she is there she reconnects with her old beau. Well as I am working out the details of the story, I popped over to Apple Music and played Lauren Daigel essentials. I just have to say, the first two songs, “Thank God I do” and “Waiting” both seem appropriate to the overall story. After all it’s about a woman who finds out that the man she thought was her perfect mate wasn’t really all that great. Naturally she is going to meet someone who is so much better. “Waiting” is all about that, finding that you can wait for the perfect person to come along.
Favorite Songs
I think music can also help us to kind of play around with our muse a little bit. I don’t tend to listen to music when I am writing non-fiction blog posts. After all that is facts and so I feel like I need to concentrate on getting my facts down right. However, if I am working on my fiction novel. Sometimes a little bit of my favorite songs can jumpstart the creative juices.
It’s all true when listening to music in the car on the way home, I let my mind wander and start to come up with new scenerios for my characters. By the way, when I put on Lauren Daigel I was finally able to get about 1500 words hammered out on my novel so not bad for a couple of my favorite songs.
